When we have a pain we’re frightened to move in case it hurts. So we stop moving the painful part. It’s a natural response but what happens is – in order to protect the sore bit – we tense up causing our muscles to tighten which leads to more pain. This is known as the
Pain – Spasm – Pain Cycle
The longer this goes on, the worse things get as we compensate for the pain by moving differently and gradually over time as we get stiffer and sorer the pain starts to impact our lives. Doing things hurts so we stop doing them and our lives start to shrink. We stop going out, stop our exercise classes, stop seeing people, stop doing the things we enjoy and before we know it – pain has hijacked our life.
It doesn’t have to be that way. As a Soft Tissue Therapist, I am trained to work with the muscles and connective tissues (tendons, ligaments, capsules, fascia) and can quickly find out whether your pain is located here or elsewhere. Eliminating the soft tissues first makes sense as they are so accessible and treatment is non-invasive and, in many cases, this is where the problem lies.
